Getting the right skate size is just as important as choosing the right stick or helmet. A proper fit gives you better control, comfort, and speed on the ice. Here are some tips to help:
1. Go Smaller Than Your Shoe Size
Hockey skates generally fit 1 to 1.5 sizes smaller than your regular shoe size. If you wear a size 9 shoe, you’ll likely be in a size 7.5–8 skate.
2. Look for a Snug, Not Painful Fit
Your toes should just brush the front of the boot when standing. Once you bend your knees into a skating stance, your heel should sit firmly in the pocket and your toes should pull slightly away from the cap.
3. Mind the Width
Skates come in different widths (D = standard, EE = wide, etc.). If your foot feels pinched or your arch is rolling, you may need a wider fit.
4. Wear the Right Socks
Always try on skates with the thin performance socks you’ll actually wear on the ice. Thick socks can ruin the fit and cause blisters.
5. Break Them In the Right Way
Most modern skates are heat-moldable. A professional bake helps the boot form to your foot faster and reduces break-in discomfort.
6. Don’t Size Up for Growing Kids
It’s tempting to buy skates a size too big, but loose skates make it harder for kids to learn proper technique. Instead, aim for no more than a half-size of growing room.
